Free STEM & Civics Program Series for St. Louis High School Students + Educators + Community

Program Description:

Data for Civic Action aims to empower St. Louis residents to become "designers for justice," equipping them to drive positive change in their communities through the integration of technology and social justice. Participants will gain valuable skills and methods to think critically and creatively about the issues that matter most.

The program series includes a virtual workshop series, classroom takeovers, and an in-person Geo-Design Challenge on April 19th, where workshop series participants will apply the tools and skills they've acquired alongside community members to tackle real challenges facing St. Louis.

The Data for Civic Action program was made possible with grant funding from National Geographic.

This program is offered in partnership with TREX, a non-profit innovation and entrepreneur development center dedicated to strengthening the economic vitality of St. Louis.

Workshop Series:

The Data for Civic Action workshops will explore how data can be used to address important community issues in St. Louis, such as housing, urban development, environmental health, & placemaking. Participants learn practical data storytelling skills to better understand St. Louis and how to make positive changes in their neighborhoods.

3/4/25 - Session 3 : Creative Placemaking

3/11/25 - Session 4 : Systems of Law and Punishment

4/1/25 - Session 5 : Storytelling with Maps

4/8/25 - Session 6 : Community Action

Classroom Takeovers:

The Data for Civic Action Classroom Takeovers are free 60-minute sessions that brings GIS, design, and advocacy directly into St. Louis classrooms.

This opportunity is available for any high school teacher or high school youth program (9-12) in the St. Louis area! Priority will be given to any sessions that will take place in March or April.

In this hands-on workshop, students will connect STEM and social issues and learn how to use real data to make a difference in their communities! They'll dive into interactive activities, assess real-world challenges, and see how technology can be a tool for change.

Potential subject offerings include (non-exhaustive):

  1. Urban Design: How can we be active participants in or communities and build stronger neighborhoods?

  2. Environmental Justice: How do pollution, climate change, and green spaces impact St. Louis communities differently

  3. Technology & Data Science: How can St. Louis communities benefit from mapping technology and data?

The St. Louis Geo-Design Challenge is a one-day interactive event where St. Louis high school students, educators, and community members come together to tackle real-world challenges using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), design principles, and civic action.

Through hands-on activities, mapping exercises, and collaborative problem-solving, participants will explore urban issues, reimagine neighborhood spaces, and develop community-centered solutions to shape the future of St. Louis. Anyone interested in reimagining St. Louis should attend!
